, and i remember growing up at that time around clement street. we call the richmond district the new chinatown in the 1980's at that time. just being around the tremendous unique neighborhood, and discovering san francisco in the 1980's as i grew up, but i also have been very active as a community organizer. i worked in chinatown, and some first jobs also at the mental health center in the richmond area multi services in the 1980's, and i was also a staff are at the chinatown youth center -- i was also a staffer. a lot of my work has been supporting community empowerment, especially in an immigrant and people of color communities. most recently, i have been teaching at san francisco state. i ran the immigrant rights coalition in the city in the 1990's for several years. i'm also an immigration attorney, and a lot of my passion is supporting in power met for immigrant communities in the city as well. >> why did you choose to live in san francisco? supervisor mar: a lot of people bring this up, but is one of the most exciting, culturally diverse places in the world. learning about new

of people are marching on chevron's richmond refinery. the rich manned fire snot -- richmond fire is not the only ones of on their minds. we start with a group gathered outside the chevron refinery in richmond right now. ktvu allie rasmus joins us live to explain their message. good afternoon allie. >> reporter: this group got here around 11:30 be a group of them gathered outside the richmond refineries gone gates. there was 70-100 people out here with their signs. it looks like a few of the people in the group have left and the demonstration may be coming to an end. one of the things we did notice is that the chevron signs that are normally displayed have been covered up with plywood. one of the things the group here is calling for for is for more government and public oversight of chevron and other oil companies and stricter safety standards to prevent the type of fire that happened here last month. the protestors also say oil companies should be nationalized and publicly controlled and chevron should pay more in taxes to support richmond schools and the local communities. the p

, mold. as far as heat goes. it's the richmond. we don't get any heat. so those aren't issues anymore. the rendering that we show here, obviously you need light to supplement what's coming in. we don't think of it as a dungeon. it has light wells. regarding parking, my understanding is that the dentist who wants to move in already has a client base that's already used to parking in another location. so it's not going to be a big leap of faith for parking. i've used the bust -- bus. it's not a big deal. plus, this is a transit corridor. it's a lot of public investment in something. you want to slow that up with a lot of parking. anybody who tries to put parking on that side will find there's no room for anything else. and so i'm afraid that it will just stay the way it is. more over, if you put parking in it's going to be a curve across the side walk. it makes for a lousy streetscape in an urban area. for all those reasons, i think that the project as its been developed and with that one reservation that was mentioned that it would be lowered to the height of the bui it, i think we sho

others to get their input into the future of the richmond district's landmark. i also wanted to say i'm working closely with the arts commission staff to look at perhaps bringing art in the storefronts to some of the different vacate spaces in the richmond district as well. also, i'm calling for a hearing along with the support of supervisors farrell and olague, for a hearing at the land use committee to hear our plans to mitigate the traffic challenges upon the opening of the geary masonic target that's planned for some time in 2013. we hope that this will help people, especially residents and stakeholders, give input but also make the area safer for pedestrians, bicyclists, seniors and families in particular. i'm pleased again that we're doing this with the three supervisors that are around that key spot in our city. also, on a related note, i'll be asking the county transportation authority to hold a hearing to fully fund the masonic boulevard plan. the boulevard plan was the one chosen by many of the residents and businesses. i know the mta recently just approved, just minutes ago

we shot as people were arriving. one group brought t-shirts to hand out that read: healthy richmond. one of the bigger questions residents want answered is why did the board say the air quality was okay right after the but a few days later say there were harmful particles in the air? in their own words here are the concerns by some of residents and the answer given by the chairman of the board who i interviewed ahead of the meeting who happens to be a county supervisor representing richmond. >> in gap between information and monitoring has been going on too long and it is time to bridge that gap. >> air quality board needs to be proactive not reactive. which is what they seem to be. >> the air district only had relatively limited testing and was not able to grab samples of the toxic cloud or the fire cloud. i think that's the issue making clear to the public there's limitations in the sampling that did occur and to be clear with the public not just to report the data in a limited way. i think we have to always do a better job of explaining what the data means in a larger context. th
